Liam Crotty’s Miami New Times cover photo: Pablo Cano’s burlesque marionette Kandy Kane
May 7th, 2012Reposted at the request of Liam Crotty.
My Miami New Times cover photo:

May 7, 2012
Last week the Art Director of the MIAMI NEW TIMES, Miche Ratto, called to say he wanted to hire me tophotograph this week’s cover. To say the least, I was extremely delighted and honored and of all the subjects he wanted photographed it was Cuban marionette artist PABLO CANO who I know well and have photographed a FEW TIMES already. In just 24 hours we put together the shoot with Pablo, Miche and myself at the excellent Studio 1415 in North Miami whose co-owner Chris was a big help with equipment and lighting. You’ll see in a few of the photos Pablo and Miche positioning Pablo’s marionettes.
The Miami New Times, owned by New York’s VILLAGE VOICE and is “the definitive source of information for news, music, movies, restaurants, reviews, and events in Miami”, chose Pablo for the cover to debut his Red Velvet Theater which he launched last month (see MY PHOTOS of his dress rehearsal inaugural production). The 3 marionettes Pablo (who was voted BEST ARTIST OF THE YEAR in Miami) chose for the photo shoot were: the burlesque star Kandy Kane, Boring Boris and Louis Armstrong. Obviously, Kandy Kane stole the crowd and was chosen for the cover.

Political propaganda as a means to manipulate the masses is not a new concept. In order to BE, it is necessary to BELONG, and this “belonging” is made up of colors, symbols and rhythms that add up to the tyranny of a national identity. The methods of manipulation have evolved over time. Gone are the lengthy, fiery diatribes shouted out from the pulpit. The voice that dictates behavior has descended from the heights, shed its old habit, shaved its beard and colored its monochromatic nature with new shades and tones. Power has learned the subtle art of mingling in the crowd, appearing as a forward-thinking worker, as a most innocent train conductor, speaking softly and wearing a mask of protest. We are left to roam aimlessly, incapable of spontaneous movements. In a deliciously ironic gesture, Novo Aniversario turns the tables on this updated form of manipulation by selecting the same medium used by Power to direct and dominate, to EDUCATE and CHANNEL the anger of those betrayed by unkept promises, those who have learned that tomorrow can be now or never, that it is unjust to force an individual to choose between homeland and death. Through messages and symbols, Novo Aniversario challenges ideology at a global level and issues a sort of politically merciless universal proclamation. These 27 political posters denounce one of the most egregious crimes of our time: Power’s intent, occasionally successful, to persuade individuals that they are incapable of being agents of change.

Florida Grand Opera is proud to present an exciting production of a classic tale – Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette – appears at the Broward Center on May 10 & 12, 2012. Directed by David Lefkowich, this production employs innovative light projection and multi-unit sets to drive the emotion behind the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers. Lefkowich consulted the libretto, pulling from it fire and water imagery that complements that mood of each scene. For instance, light projections reflecting fire ignite during the first duet between the lovers at the Capulet ball, followed by cooling reflections of water in the balcony scene. Coupled with a three-unit facade, the light projections and set work in unison to produce images and ideas. This backdrop allows the singers to truly shine by creating grandeur through simplicity.

MIAMI – Florida Grand Opera’s highly successful 2011-2012 season closes with a French classic, Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, opening on April 21, 2012. Directed by David Lefkowich, making his FGO main stage debut, this production employs innovative light projection and multi-unit sets to drive the emotion behind the timeless tale of star-crossed lovers.
Of the many operatic treatments of Shakespeare’s play, Gounod’s has been the most enduring, with its perfect depiction of the unrestrained passion of youth and the bitter tragedy visited on the rival Capulet and Montague families. Lefkowich consulted the libretto, pulling from it fire and water imagery to complement each poignant scene. Inventive projections and a three-unit set designed by Erhard Rom work in tandem to bring these visuals to life on stage. This method of creating a sense of grandeur through simplicity allows the singers and the essence of the work to truly shine.
This exciting production stars French tenor Sébastien Guèze as Roméo. Called “one of the most promising young tenors of his generation” by Opera News, Guèze made his FGO debut in David DiChiera’s Cyrano at the close of the 2010-2011 season. There, he unveiled a new aria for the role of Christian, delivering it with “a real leading man’s voice … [and] a depth and emotional edge that gave the character a redeeming integrity,” according toSouth Florida Classical Review.
He is joined by the beautiful Mexican soprano María Alejandres as Juliette. Alejandres got her start in 2008, when she won Plácido Domingo’s internationally acclaimed opera and zarzuela competition, Operalia. She made her FGO debut as the lead in Lucia di Lammermoor in 2010 and has since sung the role of Juliette at La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, and San Antonio Opera, showcasing what the Intermezzo opera blog called a “naturally gorgeous … [and] a big lustrous lyric soprano.”
A former FGO Young Artist, baritone Jonathan Michie returns as Mercutio. Last summer, he performed the role of Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia as a member of San Francisco Opera’s prestigious Merola Opera Program. TheSan Francisco Chronicle described it as a “true musical and theatrical supernova … a vehicle for both vocal mastery and theatrical panache. His singing was fluid, precise and full of burnished colors, and he brought a seemingly effortless charisma to everything he did.” Michie is the 2011-2012 Morgan P. and Evelyn R. Gilbert Artist and his appearance is sponsored by Isabel and Marvin Leibowitz.
Known for his thoughtful and idiomatic interpretations, Joseph Mechavich makes his FGO debut as conductor. His work in Daytona Opera’s L’elisir d’amore is described as having “wrapped the whole performance in a kind of musically magic aura that resulted in one of the very best all-round productions ever…” says Opera News. Most recently, he conducted Calgary Opera’s Moby-Dick with critical acclaim.
Roméo et Juliette is made possible by a generous donation from Randy Gage, and the Miami After Opera Party is sponsored by Dr. Steven C. Sanders. María Alejandres is sponsored by R. Angel and Alba González. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, please contact Director of Development Thomas Schramm at 305-854-1643 x 1201 or via email at tschramm@fgo.org.

LOUIS VUITTON PRESENTS LOUIS VUITTON ART TALKS WITH VIK MUNIZ
October 14th, 2011Miami, Fl – The Louis Vuitton Art Talk series made its Miami debuted on Sept. 7, with an intimate discussion between renowned Brazilian artist, Vik Muniz, and Gringo Cardia, Creative Director of SPECTACULU. Mr. Muniz is a frequent collaborator with SPECTACULU, a Brazilian non-profit institution that educates at-risk youths in art, design and photography.
“Louis Vuitton’s relationship with the world of art dates back to our founder, and continues to evolve and expand to this day,†said Valerie Chapoulaud-Floquet, President and CEO of Louis Vuitton North America. “The Louis Vuitton Art Talk series is a vital part of our art initiatives worldwide, and we are fortunate to feature an artist of Vik Muniz’s caliber at our first-ever Miami Art Talk. Louis Vuitton’s ongoing dedication to the arts runs parallel to our support of arts education initiatives around the world, and we are delighted to celebrate our recent move to Aventura with Vik’s new installation, and to give our support to the students of SPECTACULU.“
The Art Talk coincided with the display of Muniz’s art installation, Innumerable, at Louis Vuitton Aventura’s dedicated art space. As part of this inaugural exhibit at Louis Vuitton Aventura, Muniz has created a vibrant, wood and canvas sculpture inspired by Louis Vuitton’s iconic “LV†logo, in honor of Louis Vuitton’s longstanding relationship with contemporary art. Composed of 23 individual logos stacked upon a single base, the sculpture is covered in printed canvas, illustrated with colorful drawings and art work that Muniz created in collaboration with students from SPECTACULU.
Launched in 2006 in the UK, Louis Vuitton Art Talks is an ongoing cultural program designed to provide invited audiences with a unique and exclusive personal insight into the life and work of the artist. Previous talks in the series have featured Xavier Veilhan, Ruben Toledo, Vanessa Beecroft, Dinos and Jake Chapman, Sam Taylor-Wood, Tracey Emin, Chris Ofili and Antony Gormley. In October 2010, Louis Vuitton and MoCA hosted an intimate discussion between Richard Prince and Jeffry Deitch at the home of Edythe and Eli Broad in Malibu, CA, marking the North American debut of the Louis Vuitton Art Talk series. This was followed by a conversation between the French artist, Xavier Veilhan, and Philippe Vergne, Director of Dia Art Foundation, at the unveiling of Veilhan’s large-scale art installation, Mobile, at the Louis Vuitton Fifth Avenue Maison in December, 2010; and by an evening with renowned artist and illustrator, Ruben Toledo, in conversation with Editor-in-Chief of :The New York Times Style Magazine, Sally Singer, at Louis Vuitton Soho in March, 2011.
ABOUT LOUIS VUITTON AND ART
A symbol of elegance and style throughout the world, Louis Vuitton has cultivated a close relationship with the world of art since its founding in 1854. Inventing the art of travel, Louis Vuitton and his successors kept pace with a rapidly changing age, working with the most accomplished engineers, decorators, painters, photographers and designers of the day. This fascination with ever-new forms of expression grew through the subsequent decades and continues today under the guidance of its artistic director, Marc Jacobs. Following on from Louis Vuitton’s previous collaborations in the 1980s with painters such as César, Sol LeWitt and Olivier Debré, Marc Jacobs has since invited some of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists to join forces with Louis Vuitton, increasing the points of exchange between art and fashion to an unprecedented degree. Among these renowned artistic partnerships, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and the late Stephen Sprouse interacted directly with the Maison’s iconic Monogram, freely appropriating its forms and visual identity. Collaborations between Louis Vuitton and other artists have taken a variety of forms: shop window designs, site-specific art installations for stores, contemporary art exhibitions at the Espace Louis Vuitton in Paris and the acquisitions of artworks for the Maison’s own collection. In the same spirit, Louis Vuitton has called upon an international pantheon of architects to design its stores, including Jun Aoki, Kumiko Inui and Peter Marino.
ABOUT VIK MUNIZ
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 1961, New York-based artist Vik Muniz began his career as a sculptor, before gradually becoming more interested in photographic reproductions of his work. Often incorporating unlikely materials into this photographic process, Muniz is perhaps best-known for his 1997 series, Pictures of Chocolate, and 2006 series, Pictures of Junk. His work has been exhibited worldwide, meeting with commercial success and critical acclaim alike, and his solo show at MAM in Rio de Janeiro was second only to Picasso in attendance records. Muniz’s collaborative work with Brazilian landfill workers was the subject of the 2011 Academy Award nominated documentary, WASTELAND.
ABOUT GRINGO CARDIA
Gringo Cardia is one of Brazil’s most sought-after designers in the world of performing arts and video. He has successfully integrated the three disciplines in which he works – architecture, graphic design and theatrical staging – designing sets for hundreds of theatrical productions, music shows and award-winning music videos. In 2000, in tandem with respected Brazilian actress, Marisa Orthin, Gringo founded SPECTACULU, a School of Scenic Arts, Design and Photography offering support and professional development to young people in high-risk environments in and around Rio de Janeiro.
