About the Bass Museum of Art:

Located in Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art offers a dynamic year-round calendar of exhibitions exploring the connections between contemporary art and works of art from its permanent collection of Renaissance and Baroque paintings, sculpture, textiles, Apulian Vessel Gallery and Egyptian Gallery. Artists’ projects, educational programs, lectures, concerts and free family days complement the works on view. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a collection of Renaissance and Baroque works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, the collection was housed in an Art Deco building designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast. Architect Arata Isozaki designed an addition to the museum between 1998 and 2002 that doubled its size from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet.  Most recently, the museum selected internationally acclaimed Oppenheim Architecture + Design to lead its first phase of design and renovation tied to the 2010 completion of Miami Beach’s Collins Park. Oppenheim redesigned and relocated the museum’s arrival area to flow from and into the new park on Collins Avenue. For more information, please visit http://www.bassmuseum.org

ING Miami Marathon Runners Will Wear Stephen Gamson’s Pop Art Around Their Necks

If the depleted bodies of ING Miami Marathon finishers haven’t resorted to feeding on their eye muscles for fuel reserves during the 26.2 miles (or 13.1 for the half) of the race, they’ll be greeted with an exciting sight at the finish line. The medal for this year’s tenth anniversary race on January 29th features a weighty and bold number “10″ backed by the Miami skyline, and strung up with a ribbon designed by celebrity pop artistStephen Gamson.

Among other high profile projects, Gamson has been a featured artist at Art Basel, where he created a design that adorned a Lamborghini in 2010; his work has appeared at the Cannes Film Festival; and he’s been commissioned by Cafe Bustelo, Prince Albert the II, the Sony Ericcson Open, and the City of Miami.

This year, the runner count is expected to exceed 25,000 for the first time. Many participants are collectors of Miami’s marathon medals, which over the years have included 3-D palm trees and even a one carat diamond. This year’s celebratory medal weighs a massive 8.1 ounces, about six times the bulk of the first Miami Marathon’s measly 1.3 ounce medal.

ING Marathon co-founder Frankie Ruiz came to Gamson after seeing his design on the Lamborghini for Art Basel last year, which featured figures running. Gamson was pleased to sign on to the project.

    marathon lambo.jpg
Gamson driving a Lamborghini dressed up with his artwork
”It’s something I’m excited to participate in, especially since it’s got such a cult following in Miami, and 68 percent of the people are going to be coming from outside this area,” Gamson said. “I thought it would be a positive energy experience to be involved in. These things stay with people for the rest of their lives, [hanging] on rearview mirrors or headboards, or framed and put in people’s offices and homes. I thought it would be great to be a part of their lives.”His design features runners of both genders, stars, and clean lines. He purposely kept the design simple in the interest of achieving visual harmony between the medal and the ribbon.

“I thought it would be better to do something big and bold for the easy read, as opposed to something that was busy and so colorful that it would take away from the award itself. So I wanted to keep it understated in a way so you can appreciate the medal for what it is, as a medal, rather than it being about just my artwork.”

Gamson’s ribbon features lines like rays of sunshine emanating from the top of the medal. “If you look at it the right way, it looks like a sun’s rising behind the city of Miami. It was a nice play, collaborating the medal and the ribbon, tying them in together so that they’re more of one piece as opposed to in the past, where … the ribbon was the ribbon, the medal was the medal.”

Gamson doesn’t run much himself these days, but he used to compete in 10K races, and this project has sparked a renewed interest in exercise and fitness for the artist.

“I have great admiration and respect for anyone that makes a commitment to something as significant as a marathon,” Gamson said. “And I’m grateful that I will become a part of this celebration in that my artwork will be a part of the achievement award for finishing the race. And it’s inspirational for me to get out there and start exercising myself a little bit more.”

Gamson’s upcoming projects include designing Moet Champagne bottles for the Miami Wine and Food Festival and the exterior of a new luxury electric car.

Monsters roam about in Wynwood Art Gallery District, Miami

    February 3rd, 2012

The Monster Project is pleased to announce the completion of two new public works in Wynwood and Little Haiti this past year.

As part of Noise Field, an exhibition at Dorsch Gallery this past summer and concurrent with Art Basel, in collaboration with Art Studio Miami last December, Brooklyn-based artist Kylin O’Brien has brought her ongoing street art initiative, The Monster Project, to Miami.

Over the course of four years, The Monster Project has been creating visions of neighborhood guardians by working with local children on drawings of monsters – then turning them into potent, quirky, iconic murals and placing them within the urban environment. Her children’s monster-guardians have roamed from Brooklyn to the West Coast and are now at home among the magnificent and diverse street art murals of Miami.

The two local children whose drawings have been turned into public works this past year are both of Haitian descent and participants in afterschool programs at Art Studio Miami, the wonderful non-profit organization where O’Brien held her monster drawing workshops last year. Since 2007, Art Studio has provided solutions towards healing systemic poverty by empowering young minds to lead successful lives and have hope-filled futures. The Monster Project and Art Studio Miami share the common goal of enriching children’s lives by encouraging their creative voices and by giving them an environment in which those voices may be both validated and heard.

As the children were overheard celebrating upon O’Brien’s completion of the first mural at Dorsch Gallery, “Jeffery’s got a BILLBOARD!” rang throughout Art Studio’s open space.

ART WYNWOOD REVEALS EXHIBITOR LIST &

ANNOUNCES “THE FLYING MURALS” OF WYNWOOD

Inaugural fair attracts more than 50 galleries from around the world,

spotlights Wynwood Arts District as a flourishing cultural destination

Art Miami, LLC. is pleased to announce its confirmed exhibitor list in association with the launch of Art Wynwood, taking place President’s Day Weekend, Feb. 16 – 20, 2012. Held in the spacious 100,000-square-foot Art Miami Pavilion, which attracted more than 55,000 attendees during the 2011 edition of Art Miami, the inaugural five-day International Contemporary Art Fair will showcase a compelling array of cutting-edge, contemporary and modern artwork by both emerging and established artists from more than 50 galleries, including “the flying murals of Wynwood” commissioned by the district’s own Tony Goldman.

Art Wynwood will feature paintings, photography, sculpture, art video and new media, conceptual art and urban street art by 500 artists from 13 countries: Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, the Netherlands, Venezuela, United Kingdom and the United States. With representation from 100 cities from around the world, including 50 across the U.S., Art Wynwood will further distinguish the Wynwood Arts District as a leading cultural destination for acquiring contemporary art. A VIP Private Preview will be held in celebration of the opening on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012.

“This is a very exciting time and opportunity for the Wynwood Arts District, as well as Miami, our organization, exhibitors and the international community of art collectors who vacation or call South Florida home during President’s Day Weekend,” said Nick Korniloff, Director and Partner of Art Wynwood. “Art Wynwood will further ignite the Wynwood Arts District urban revitalization by providing a high quality, standalone International Contemporary Art Fair that will garner international recognition for the district and deliver a positive economic impact for many years to come.”

Capturing the essence of what the Wynwood Arts District and the Miami Art scene have to offer is paramount. Notably, Tony Goldman, who has been a driving force in the evolution of the arts and warehouse district of Wynwood, will exhibit what he describes as “the flying murals of Wynwood” in the fair’s VIP Lounge.  Under his guidance, six 8’ x 24’ murals by international artists, including a Retna work from the Janet and Tony Goldman Collection, an existing piece from How & Nosm, as well as new murals from DAZE, Aiko and Futura, will be installed. Goldman will also be an integral part of Art Wynwood’s soon-to-be-announced host committee, which will be comprised of industry leaders in the art, design and media worlds from Miami and beyond. He states, “We applaud the organizers of Art Wynwood for their decision to launch a new art fair in Miami next month. This is a wonderful example of how Miami – and specifically Wynwood – has evolved into a year round arts destination.  I think I speak on behalf of the entire Wynwood community in welcoming and supporting Art Wynwood.”

NIGHT AT THE OPERA, LA RONDINE IS SUPERB AS AN ART DECO SPLENDOR SUNG BY SOPRANO, ELIZABETH CABALLERO

    January 27th, 2012

    LA RONDINE

Starring local, Cuban soprano Elizabeth Caballero, Florida Grand Opera presents the South Florida premiere of this rarely performed Puccini opera – La rondine. It is the story of a kept woman who leaves her luxurious life to pursue true love. In the end, the hardships of reality force her to leave the man she loves and, like to bird to the nest, return to her former life.

The production is sung in Italian with projected translations in Spanish and English.

READ MY REVIEW, JAN 21, 2012:

My experience at the Florida Grand Opera on opening night of La Rondine by Puccini.

Miami soprano, Elizabeth Caballero is superb as her beautiful voice reverberates throughout the entire opera. She plays the role of Magda in the romantic and comedic opera. Portuguese tenor Bruno Ribeiro plays Ruggero, the love of her life in this tale of aristocrats who fall in love, yet have to maintain their status among the elite which, unfortunately, denies them the opportunity to experience true happiness.

Magda’s female friends are wearing costumes which are pastel pink, lavender turquoise and teal flapper dresses. The highly-sophisticated Art Deco set and backdrop is evocative of the roaring 1920′s; so fitting for our magic city which has so many buildings of that style and time period along Miami Beach’s Ocean Drive.

    Cecilia Paz

The set of the first act is simple, yet opulent in some of the elements of design which included chaise lounges, enormous French windows, Art Noveau style lamps as our eyes are being drawn to a grand crystal chandelier which is its central focal point.

As the story develops, Magda, is torn between her husband and her lover. Her husband is an older gentleman whom she grows accustomed to while maintaining a life of affluence and security. Ruggero visits Magda’s home and professes his love for her.

The audience, along with the Magda feels her sadness: she leaves us as a broken woman in love with a dilemma when the lights dim. When we see Magda again she is at a cabaret while frolicking in a playful coral dress. The can-can girls make flighty appearances as they sway their skirts and kick up their legs in an arena that exuded ravishing fun!

Ruggero appears again as the dancers in the cabaret enjoy themselves while carrying on in dance and conversation. Magda and he kiss, kiss and kiss some more as they delude themselves into a fantasy world of absolute magnificence. The lights dim and the large cast of the cabaret takes a bow.

The lights come on again for an intermission and the audience is left with the feeling that perhaps their romance would somehow continue. As the opera resumes the final act reveals a few twists and turns that changes the fate of their romance.

Magda and Ruggero come in from a swim in the ocean wearing their period style swimsuits and cover up while reminiscing about the wonderful time they are spending together. Then Magda reveals her consequential secret! Ruggero is in devastation and Magda walks off the set along with her maid leaving him to deal with the remains.

Turning the Miami Beach Botanical Garden into an ALL AGES PLAYGROUND!

How Do You Define “Emerging Artist”? Is it solely a matter of age? Exhibition experience? Name recognition? Can someone in his or her seventies be an emerging artist? Or is it time to take that term out?

At the moment I am trying to figure out the definition of emerging artist which is proving far more difficult than I would have thought. There are literally hundreds of definitions of an emerging artist many of which seem to be tailored to specific circumstances or events. After doing extensive research I am still between definitions as to whether an emerging artist should be related to age, length of career, commercial success or the period of time after having finished formal artist training?

A decade ago, emerging signified an artist who was getting some attention-emerging from the pack, as it were, and onto the radar screen of curators, dealers and critics. There were a number of indicators that an artist was emerging: inclusion in good group shows, positive reviews, a well-received solo, maybe sales to a few good collectors, and some word-of-mouth buzz. My advice is not to take the term too seriously the term seems kind of flexible, a hedge. It’s really a euphemism for “not famous,” and certainly I could care less about being famous as long we have the opportunity to achieve exhibitions with substance; is not the age but the work of the artist that counts.

The first Emerging artist series exhibition is inspired by the Danish artist Palle Nielsen’s project The Model: A Model for a Qualitative Society, that took place in 1968 at the Moderna Museet Stockolm – a playground in the museum – where Nielsen posed questions such as to have the chance for the artists to “become themselves,” and express their own reality through play in a setting unfettered by the urban environment and adapted to their energetic activity. One of Nielsen’s big achievements was to open doors to discuss how this project takes art and activism’s in new directions, functioning precisely like a model: a small-scale, concrete experiment with speculative potential.

MIAMI’S SOPRANO ELIZABETH CABALLERO IN PUCCINI’S “LA RONDINE” OPENS TOMORROW, Jan 21, 2012, FLORIDA GRAND OPERA

    January 20th, 2012

    LA RONDINE

The work originated in 1913, when Puccini was approached in Vienna about composing a Viennese operetta. He produced the love story of a kept woman who leaves her protector in pursuit of true love, which she has never known. La rondine premiered at the opera house in Monte Carlo in 1917. Magda’s aria “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta” is one of Puccini’s most beautiful and is justifiably famous. La rondine means “the swallow” and refers to a prediction made early in the opera that although Magda may spread her wings in search of love and romance, she, like the swallow, will return to the life she knows. Although it never attained the popularity of many of Puccini’s other works, La rondine has recently enjoyed considerable new interest, attracting leading singers in productions at major opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera (2009) and San Francisco Opera (2007). The production opening in Miami premiered with New York City Opera in 1984.

Opening at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County on January 21, 2012, La rondine will feature a company favorite – Cuban-born, Miami-raised soprano Elizabeth Caballero - in the role of Madga. Known for her “lustrous lyric soprano … strong, clean technique and vocal control,” as written by South Florida Classical Review, her last appearances with FGO include Mimì in La bohème, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, and Liu in Turandot, which South Florida Classical Review called a “meltingly effective vocal performance … [with] warm, middle-range tones and floating high notes.”

She will be joined by Portuguese tenor Bruno Ribeiro as Ruggero and Corinne Winters as Lisette. Ribeiro has been praised for “courage, dedication and a well-projected lyrical voice with firm, sharp tones,” according to the Spanish newspaper La Razón. Most recently, Winters made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera in the 2010-2011 season as Countess Ceprano in Rigoletto and returned to the company shortly after for their new production of Das Rheingold.

FGO Music Director Ramon Tebar, who previously stood at the FGO podium for Lucia di Lammermoor andTurandot, will conduct this production. Nicola Bowie, who directed FGO’s 2008 La bohème, returns as the Stage Director for La rondine. This production is made possible by a generous gift from the Arthur F. and Alice E. Adams Foundation and the Adams Supporting Foundation. The Miami After Opera Party is sponsored by Gibraltar Private Bank.

HAVANA AS NEVER SEEN BEFORE BY ESTEEMED FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHER, MICHAEL EASTMAN AT ART MIAMI

    December 29th, 2011

HAVANA-UNFORGETTABLE IMAGES BY PHOTOGRAPHER, MICHAEL EASTMAN REPRESENTED BY BARRY FRIEDMAN GALLERY, NEW YORK, ART MIAMI 2011

After seeing the incredible images taken by Mr. Michael Eastman, self-taught and esteemed photographer with so many accolades, they are simply too long to list; I was completely enthralled by their incredible beauty. Eastman is interested in the Fine Art aspects of his photographs as they relate to composition, lighting, line, color, texture, and the nostalgia of what once was. His prints are quite large and stunning. My own heritage is part Cuban as my father is from Marianao, Cuba and the images give myself a clearer picture of the beauty that Havana houses. Just imagine looking at these photos and imagining that life took place there!

Some interiors rival that of some parts of European palaces and a viewer may not realize he or she is looking at the dilapidated Cuba which once was the jewel of the Caribbean (circa 1959) bustling with casinos, hotels with casinos, and celebritydom including well-known actors and even mobsters. One cannot ignore the images when viewing them in person as they are mesmerizing for their large scale and elegance, even if the structures have been damaged by people following the senselessness of Fidel Castro.

The very humble and candid Michael Eastman, gives Cuba its due mark in historical significance by depicting its splendid architecture and elevated culture while documenting and staging the aesthetic that was originally intended in these landmarks. The world owes this fine artist much gratitude.

On sale is his book entitled, Havana. I was lucky enough to obtain a copy dedicated to my father for his birthday present. Contact Barry Friedman Gallery for a copy.

    Portrait, Havana, 2010, Digital C-print, 90 x 72 inches, Barry Friedman Gallery

Here is my impromptu interview while Mr. Eastman was exhibiting his work during Art Miami 2011.

-Do you fall into the category of being a photojournalist? Your works have appeared in such publications as Time and Life magazine. Also, you have an extensive and impressive list of exhibitions and works in some of the most prestigious museums around the globe.

“I think all photojournalists are historians, regardless of intent. I think people try to answer the question of what the past looked like in my own photography.”

-I noticed the buildings or structures act like narratives in your photographs, yet there are no people in the frames.

“I like to make portraits without the people being in them. I am creating an environment that entices the curiosity of the viewer.

-Are you telling us a story of what took place at a particular location?

The architectural setting allows you make your own interpretation of what took place and who was there. I think it makes the images more powerful that way.”

-Are the images to make human connections?

“As a viewer, you are more involved in the process the third or fourth time you gaze at each photo.”

-Are the images in any way political?

    “Absolutely not.”

-Are these staged or candid shots?

They are carefully planned with color and design.

-Do you add the captions of the photographs known as “cut lines?”

“No. It is really the viewer adding their own bias.”

BIOGRAPHY OF MICHAEL EASTMAN (REPOSTED FROM THE ARTIST’S WEBSITE)

Michael Eastman has established himself as one of the world’s leading contemporary photographic artists. The self-taught photographer has spent four decades documenting interiors and facades in cities as diverse as Havana, Paris, Rome, and New Orleans, producing large-scale photographs unified by their visual precision, monumentality, and painterly use of color. Eastman is most recognized for his explorations of architectural form and the textures of decay, which create mysterious narratives about time and place. He still relies on capturing the image on film and continues to print the images himself.

Eastman’s photographs have appeared in Time, Life, and American Photographer, and they reside in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and other prestigious institutions. His books include Vanishing America (2008, Rizzoli) and Horses (2003, Knopf), which is now in its fifth edition. Eastman lives in St. Louis.

Thank you Alejandro Mendoza and Noor for inviting me to participate in Giants in the city 2011. This experience has opened a new world for me both in a professional and on a personal level. To arrive all the way from Stockholm in Sweden to the sunny Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami and install the monumental piece was a mind-blowing experience that means a lot to me.

    What’s ‘trapping’ you today?

Giselle Delgado (COL) “It was a great pleasure to be part of Giants in the City this Art Basel Season. As a part of a group collaboration, I found that it was a fantastic way to bring the community together and to promote that for which we live for: the arts! Seeing people being drawn to interact with these Giants brought a huge satisfaction to my soul.

Thank you Alejandro Mendoza for your support and for the wonderful experience!”

“Trapped” evokes this same tragic conflict between where we are and where we feel we should be. Within every human is the innate desire for something greater, an itching question that this life was no accident, that you were created for something more.

“Trapped” is a socially interactive piece. To interact with “Trapped” find and scan the QR code on the cloud, or tweet what’s ‘trapping’ you @TrappedCloud.www.theartisanlounge.com/trappedCloud

One of my greatest goals as an artist has always been to work on large-scale art projects that demand an outstanding scale of surrender and dedication. Being one of the “Giants in The City” has been an absolute joy. The unique experience of presenting my monumental inflatable sculpture to the community has been wonderful and it has once again shown me the power that art can have over the general public at large. It has rectified the fact that artists can enrich peoples lives by creating temporary magical places where we are all allowed to be kids again.

”Whimsical sculpture that creates the illusion of movement and space. It can be link it to Expressionism in the recurrent and unrestrained usage of the degraded primary colors; and also with Op Art, in the application of lines that produce a sensation of movement at a visual level.”

    Cecilia Lueza

    “LOVESEAT”

    Sandra Garcia (Colombia)

“Art Basel Miami Beach art week is always a “revolú” (I don’t know the translation in English) in this time of the year, but even more exciting is to be part of a public art project like Giants in the City. I can’t tell you my feelings every time I saw children posing for a picture next to my piece “Loveseat” and tourists and local people saving a moment with a camera or just walking around to enjoy the giant pieces at the Bayfront Park, which was transformed with sculptures of unimaginable sizes. The Giants in the City project is certainly a NECESSITY for the arts in Miami because it brings amusement and learning to the community.”

“A loveseat is much more than a common couch just decorating a room; it is the best place for a private moment with your own or someone else; it invites to talk and to be listened in a space surrounded by a bubble of unforgettable intimacy.”

Neo-pop art (the definition of my technique) expressed the irradiation of positive energy, peace and freedom. “VW” GIANT resembles the balance of the positive energy, peace and freedom inviting you to feel floating in a world of unique colors where anything is possible. Please have a seat in “VW” and have a colorful trip, that it will bring you this harmony to your life.

Congratulations!!! to the group of GIANTS IN THE CITY & IRREVERSIBLE by their excellent work on behalf of the artists from all over the world and specially for the ones representing Latin-America … I envision that this project continue growing and conquer soon each one of the continents of the world! Congratulations also to all the participants and those that were involved in this universal message and contribution… good work.

Astolfo Funes (b. 1973) seems like a modern-day flâneur walking the streets, but his wanderings are not aimless: he observes individuals within the multitudes, noting and registering their actions, appearances, and expressions. Then, with a passionate, aggressive use of color and brushstrokes, he records these sights, traps them on the canvas, these figures that have an air of tragedy, isolation, and seem to exist in inertia in life as much as they do on the painted surface.

    Bartus Bartolome (FR-VNZLA)

AT THE END OF THE HEAVEN THE ENDLESS HEAVEN

“An intriguing Giant pushing the boundaries of what is considered personalized drawing or hand sign-making combined with text, prints and hand colors. Bartus Bartolome works main subject are constantly questioning history and the how  contemporaneous events have marked our ordinary life during the last decades such as the New York Twin Towers attacks, the new-Gorila-nization of Latin America and the unexpected Japanese natural catastrophe’s phenomenon. The artist juxtaposes exotic influences from as far as Africa, Asia , Europe, South and North America to articulate his discovery of asymmetrically iconography art contrasts between East and West, expanding metaphoric visions, transcending barriers of time in the plastics imagery and converging into a new archeology of meta-signs and poetry.

    GIANTS IN THE CITY

Through its annual successful traveling public art exhibitions GIANTS IN THE CITY adds value, in both aesthetic and economic terms, to cities, places and communities. In many cities public art is, in itself a tourist attraction. Our GIANT goal is to be used to welcome, inspire and attract people, to contribute to and celebrate the uniqueness of Miami by making reference to the unique diversity of our city, climate, vegetation, landforms, cultures and history.

The creation of Giants in the City was born out of my desire and necessity to express my work into a giant scale and to give art accessibility to a massive interaction in all sectors within the community. Art public exhibition is fascinating to everyone. GIANTS IN THE CITY are a contemporary visual art experience, a great alternative for any cultural event, giving the community and general public a peculiar collective art show.

These are the result of an unbelievable mastery of technique, a gigantesque ambition, a deep understanding of narrative all woven in a expressionist force in which oceans of bursting muscles unleashed by out of size feet and hand ….these are closed ups reinforcing the idea of power. But, in their eyes, one can see as through a confession, human fragility, our hopes and dreams, our tears and bursts of laughter.

Looking at these sculptures, one no longer needs to refer to influences of artistic schools; one sees that these artists have escaped the post-modern dogma to allow us to finally breathe out our humanity. This is not an art that flirts with exotic academia. The Giants are modern, contemporary, universal and of the order of myth. They tell the story of humanity, the greatness and fragility of humankind!
