When did you think of doing this Faces series?
About two months ago. I am shooting about twelve  or so large canvas prints. “I want it to look edgy and it is also a tricky look.”
Howard, I love the exteme contrast of Black and White on the subjects! Tell me a little more about their actual faces.
Well the make-up is done especially for this shoot and is applied for a Black and White Photography series.
Which photographer influenced you?
Richard Avedon. “I don’t look at at other photographer’s work. I try to come up with ideas for my work.”
What inspired you to do the Faces work?
“I was highlighting faces and bodies to become darker and I fooling around on the computer and then I thought it would be a good idea to exhibit in the gallery. Black and white seems more artistic to me. This series is more erotic.”

What is your favorite subject to shoot?
I take shots of both men and women, but shoot more women than men.”
Howard Austin Feld recounts:
“I have been photographing people for 30 years. My cousin at the time was Vice President of Advertising for Revlon. The best photographers were shooting Fashion and inspired by Irving Penn and James Moore.”
“I shot the cover for Cosmopolitan in Spanish for Latin American readers and Vanidades. I have an extensive background in Editorial Photography in beauty and fashion.
Do you have someone who was your mentor?
David Vance who was a local photographer was well-known in Miami and loved lighting and at the time did hand-retouching on prints.
Did you have formal training at a particular school?
Feld adds that he was “self-taught.” He had a Commercial Catalog studio where he took pictures of jewelry and products. “I can’t shoot pornography. I am not a photo-journalist and I can’t shoot wars. I do take pictures of what I call “controlled beauty” where the lighting, poses, subjects, and people are carefully chosen. My subjects are friends and entertainers who work around town.”

Do you teach others how to photograph?
Yes, I hold workshops and have open registration on different dates. I do my own printing. My work sometimes acts as samples for private commissions.
What would you say to someone who wants to have you photograph them?
“Attitude is what is important!”
